چکیده

The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) is the rising branch of the global Hadley circulation and often considered as the climatic axis of symmetry. A full-physics atmospheric general circulation model is coupled with an intermediate ocean model to investigate the effect of ITCZ’s meridional configuration on the space-time structure of climate variability. In the control experiment where the model settles into a north-south symmetric climatology, strong interhemispheric interaction takes place and sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies are organized into an anti-symmetric dipole pattern with the equator as the nodal line. The trade winds intensify (weaken) over the anomalously cold (warm) side of the equator, indicative of a positive feedback between surface wind, evaporation and SST (WES). When the mean ITCZ is displaced into the Northern Hemisphere by perturbing the shape of continents, SST variability is significantly reduced at low-frequencies, especially with periods greater than 5 years, as a result of reduced interhemispheric interaction. The nodal line now coincides with the northward-displaced ITCZ, and the SST correlation across this nodal line is greatly reduced to a statistically insignificant level. Calculations with a simple baroclinic model of the atmosphere indicate that the departure of the climatic axis of symmetry from the geographic equator weakens the WES feedback and hence interhemispheric

The Discursive Construction of “Native” and “Non-Native” ‎Speaker English Teacher Identities in Japan: A Linguistic ‎Ethnographic Investigation

Recent poststructuralist theories of identity posit identities as being discursively constructed in interactions with society, institutions, and individuals. This study used a Linguistic Ethnographic framework to investigate the discursive identity construction of two English teachers, one ‘non-native’ English speaker, and one ‘native’ English speaker, teaching English in a tertiary institution...

Current state of bone scintigraphy protocols and practice in Japan

Objective(s): Nuclear medicine technologists in Japan often perform additional single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) with or without computed tomography (CT) after whole-body imaging for bone scintigraphy. In this study, we wanted to identify the bone scanning protocols used in Japan, together with the current clinical practices. Methods:...

We investigated the effects of large-scale orography on the tropical coupled atmosphere-ocean system over the Indian and Pacific Oceans in northern summer, using the Meteorological Research Institute coupled atmosphere-ocean General Circulation Model (GCM). Six different experiments were conducted with mountain heights of 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, 20%, and 0% of the standard mountain height. The res...

Social Policy in Japan and Sweden; A Proper Pattern for Iranian Elderlies

Objectives: In developed countries, aging of population is not a new phenomenon. However, in under development countries, such as Iran, it is necessary to think about the welfare of elderlies from now on. Due to the degradation of physical and mental abilities of elderlies, they are threatening by crucial problems. Therefore, to be safe and secure, elderlies must be provided by special supports...

The Challenge of Sustaining Long-term Care in Aging Societies: Lessons From Japan and Spain; Comment on “Financing Long-term Care: Lessons From Japan”

This article compares the provision of long-term care (LTC) in Japan and Spain, two countries with similar demographic structures but which address the provision of LTCs in very different ways. Both countries provide universal LTC. However, Japan has developed a generous benefit package of formal services for dependents to alleviate the care burden on the family, but provides no cash benefits. ...

Defining and Acting on Global Health: The Case of Japan and the Refugee Crisis

What counts as global health? There has been limited discourse to date on the ways in which country-level contexts may shape positioning in global health agendas. By reviewing Japan’s response to the refugee crisis, we demonstrate a clash between rhetoric and action on global responsibility, and suggest that cultural and historical factors may be related to the ways of perceiving and acting upo...
